The Script score Ghost Whisperer coup

America is starting to succumb to the Irish band's charms

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 28 Nov 2008

Having conquered Ireland and the UK this year, The Script will be spending the first two months of 2009 in America where there’s already huge interest in their debut album.

“We went over and did a showcase in this corporate office for the boss of Sony BMG there, Rob Stringer, and his mates,” the band’s Danny O’Donoghue tells Hot Press. “It was a real suit affair – y’know, accountants and marketing people – but me and Mark decided we weren’t going all that way to have a half-arsed show, and threw in a cover of ‘Heroes’ during which I jumped up on the table and got everybody singing and clapping.”

As an insurance policy, the band also plied the crowd with a few pints of Guinness.

“That definitely oiled the machinery,” Danny laughs. “They wanted to release the album on St. Patrick’s Day – God bless the American people! – but since then ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ has been used to promote a CBS show called Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. It’s like what they did with Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ on Grey’s Anatomy. Because of all that they’ve moved the album forward and put it on iTunes.

“iTunes also had ‘Before The Worst’ as their free ‘Single Of The Week’. They’d reckon on doing maybe 300,000 downloads over the course of two or three months, but within five days we had 500,000. Having lived in America, I know there’s still a huge amount of work to be done, but that’s a great start.”

We’ll have more – much more! – from Danny in our HP-7 Summit Meeting, which graces the Christmas edition of Hot Press out on Thursday December 4.
