The Aftermath announce tour + Only Ones support

They've also been hanging out with Shane MacGowan & The Nipple Erectors!

The Aftermath bring the curtain down on 2009 with visits to Crane Lane, Cork (November 12); Carr’s, Longford (14); Blues Bar, Harrogate (December 8); The Brudenell Social, Leeds (10 + The Only Ones); Arts Centre, Mullingar (26); Gallagher’s, Drumlish (27); and Roisin Dubh, Galway (28).

Having built their own studio, the Midlands mod poppers are due to commence work shortly on the follow up to their Friendlier Up Here debut.

Their drummer Mick Cronin has also drawn Hot Press’ attention to www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Scb4_W2qeQ footage of a gig he played earlier this year in Nenagh with the newly reconvened Nipple Erectors who were Shane MacGowan’s pre-Pogues punk band. The Nips, as their name was abbreviated to for obvious airplay-related reasons, will have a new album ready to roll in 2010.

The nimble guitar part that runs behind the chorus of ‘All I Want Is For You To Be Happy’ reminds me of Pulp’s classic ‘Do You Remember The First Time?’. The Aftermath may still have some distance to go to attain the pithy, effortless brilliance of Cocker and co., but let’s not be negative: the UK-based, Longford-bred group have delivered a solid slice of direct guitar pop, and the echoey treatment of the vocals is a nice sonic touch.

The Longford natives are competent songwriters of cheery pop gems with just a hint of dark undertones about them (though they’re nothing like the death metal band I’d once anticipated from their name!). Unfortunately, it’s spoiled by Johnny Cronin’s vocals, which to me come across like an overzealous attempt to take off Edwyn Collins. Not many bands from Longford make their way into Chris Moyles’ affections, yet The Aftermath are proving adept at making friends in high places. It’s easy to see why. ‘One Is Fun’ is very now, a quirky guitar pop tune with a spring in its step. Of course the problem with being very now is that you soon become very yesterday, so let’s hope The Aftermath have got a good exit strategy worked out. For now though, good work.
