The demon munchies, Penelope Keith, n-n-n-nineteen Paul Hardcastle, tinfoil on your knob…welcome to the tracksuitastic world of Goldie Lookin Chain. Straight out of Newport armed with a set of goodtime hip hop anthems that the Beastie Boys might have made if they hadn’t lost their sense of humour after No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn. Far more together than you’d expect a dope smoking sink estate nine-piece to be, they manage to turn initial Main Stage apathy into one of the first triumphs of the day. I wouldn’t dare go on the tear with them at my age, but if they’re playing a club date any time soon, count me in!
Meanwhile, the happiest chappies backstage are the Scissor Sisters who’ve just been informed that their debut album has gone platinum. After scotching rumours that they’ve been getting jiggy with Graham Norton in the States – they’re fans but bodily fluids haven’t been exchanged – they inform us that they’ve been looking forward to Punchestown ever since their Dublin Village gig which they rate as one of the best they’ve played on their European tour. Ah, the flatterers…
Also in celebratory mood are Franz Ferdinand who’ve just flogged the 1.1 millionth copy of their debut album. Not bad for a band who just a year ago were paid £50 to play at Oxegen’s sister festival in Scotland, T In The Park. While obviously their recent Hotpress cover was far more fetching, they’re chuffed that they’re about to be splashed all over the front of GQ and Spin.
The family that rocks together stays together…Gary Lightbody’s dad has come down to cheer on the son and air.
Justin Hawkins is to get his own personal make-up artist, darling, when The Darkness do interviews for MTV Brazil and UK tomorrow.
