IMRO & MCPSI reach royalty agreement with YouTube

Artists could be in for a major windfall.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 29 Mar 2010

IMRO and MCPSI have struck a new licensing deal with YouTube, which will mean additional royalties for the songwriters and composers they represent.

“In the digital sphere where there have been few boundaries in the widespread distribution of music content in recent years, the essential role that music creators provide in the value chain together with their underlying rights are important factors that have been very often overlooked and undervalued,” reflects IMRO Chief Executive Victor Finn. “IMRO/MCPSI is pleased to have signed this agreement with YouTube as it ensures that music creators rights are protected and that end users will continue to have access to the plethora of music content available on the YouTube service here in Ireland. We are happy to work in partnership with YouTube to ensure that the music creators that we represent continue to benefit from this successful online service.”

YouTube has been something of a music industry hot potato with the likes of Billy Bragg and K.T. Tunstall accusing the site of not paying them enough for their work, and others such as OK Go and Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer complaining when their respective labels have tried to remove their videos from it.
