Gil Scott-Heron streams new album

I'm New Here is very much worth the 16-year wait!

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 03 Feb 2010

The revolution, it appears, will be digitalised! Veteran poet and rapper Gil Scott-Heron is streaming the whole of his I’m New Here comeback album ahead of its February 5 release in Ireland on XL.

His first entirely new collection of material since 1994’s Spirits, it includes ‘New York Is Killing Me’, ‘The Crutch’, ‘Your Soul And Mine’ and ‘Me And The Devil’ among its standout moments.

The 60-year-old Chicagoan is also back gigging, so keep your fingers crossed for a Picnic appearance.

Gil Scott Heron

The improbably gangly Gil Scott Heron saunters onto the Savoy stage like a goodwill ambassador from another, less frenetic era. Clutching a conciliatory white towel, his greying hair bursting out in clumps from beneath his baseball cap, he looks for all the world like a kindly grandfather figure come to entertain at a children’s party.

Reflections

Gil Scott-Heron has been making albums for years, combining radical rap with fearless funk and jive-ass jazz. So why does an album released late last year take so long to reach either the music papers or the retail outlets?
