Elliott Smith's death an apparent suicide

Smith, who battled drug and alcohol addiction during his 34 year life, appears to have taken his own life

Elliott Smith, who died yesterday in his Los Angeles, is believed to have committed suicide.

According to reports by MTV.com and CNN, the singer’s body was found by his live-in girlfriend at around 12:18 p.m. on Tuesday, and he died shortly after being admitted to hospital.

The Los Angeles County Department of the Coroner's office has confirmed to various news sources that Smith sustained a single knife wound to the chest. It is believed that the wound was self-inflicted, however detectives are still carrying out investigations for evidence of foul play.
