Darwin Deez - worst dancer in Indie?!

As Hot Press recently found out, a conversation with Deez is a surreal experience indeed...

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 06 May 2010

In Dublin to play the Trinity Ball, Deez thinks it’s just a big party. When the full ramifications are explained he seems genuinely amazed. "Oh! So everyone that I've seen dressed up on the street, that's where they’re going? That's so funny! At least if they’re gonna drink a lot, they're gonna look nice."

When quizzed about his own hipster style, an instantly recognisable combo of ironic t-shirts, skinny jeans, headbands and oversized jumpers, he replies, "Back in 2002 hipster wasn't a negative thing so I try to bring the positive back to that."

And why does he hide his trademark 'Jewfro' off stage? "In New York, it's actually because of the young kids who just think I look weird and funny and retarded. I just couldn’t figure out how to deal with it. It didn’t feel right to yell back. But it didn’t feel bad not to say anything. I’m too sensitive.," he claims. On the angsty track 'Bad Day', the witty closer on his self-titled debut album, he croons hateful lines like; "I hope that the last the page of your 800-page novel is missing."

"It’s emotionally transparent. I attribute that to my upbringing. My Dad's a psychologist. Whenever there was a problem at home we would always get all of our emotions out on the table. That's the way I deal with all my relationships. I'm used to communicating my emotions to other people."
