Damien Rice calls for justice in Burma

Damien Rice has added his voice to calls for a UN intervention in Burma.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 25 Sep 2007

As Buddhist monks step up their protests against Burma’s military junta, Damien Rice has joined a list of high-profile celebrities in demanding United Nations intervention to secure the release of the country’s leading dissident, Aung San Suu Kyi.

In an open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the group point out that the 62-year-old is “the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner. She has been held under house arrest in Burma for 12 of the past 17 years. Aung San Suu Kyi is not just a charismatic leader, she is the elected leader of the Burmese people. In Burma’s last election, she won 82% of the seats in parliament, yet the military regime cruelly locked her up along with many members of her party.”

Joining Rice in the plea for her freedom are the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Jim Carrey, Dustin Hoffman, Eddie Izzard, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood and Robin Williams.
