Chris Cary suffers stroke
One of the people who helped revolutionise Irish radio, Chris Cary, is fighting for his life on the island of Tenerife after suffering a stroke.

“It’s serious,” confirms his partner Sybil Fennell. “He has a lung infection. He has a kidney infection and has suffered a serious stroke to the right hand side of his body. He can´t speak. He can´t even swallow at the moment. He can´t take any liquids. He´s a mass of tubes and monitors but day-by-day he’s hanging on.”
Having started his career on the offshore Radio Caroline in the late ‘60s, Cary deejayed on Radio Luxembourg before heading to Ireland where after a brief spell on Sunshine Radio he founded the legendary Radio Nova. Placing the emphasis on music rather than talk, their “clutter free” format earned them one of the biggest audience shares in the history of the state.
Following the Dublin pirate’s closure in 1986, Cary was involved in a number of UK radio projects, and returned to his old stomping ground last year to participate in the Hot Press-backed Music Ireland ’07 event.
He’d previously suffered a stroke to the left side of his body, but had made an almost a full recovery.
A true innovator, Hotpress.com wishes Chris the very best.
