Beats + Pieces: Back in the hy life again

Dance music news with Mark Kavanagh

Mark Kavanagh, 05 Jun 2007

Wicklow-based breakbeat funksters Hybrasil [pictured] warm things up for the September release of their album, The Monkey Pole, next month with a top notch single entitled ‘God Bless The Devil’, a sublime slab of psychedelic electronica with big drums, hi-hats that hiss like a rattlesnake and infectious guitars and sitars galore.

It’s the missing link between George Harrison and Chemical Brothers, and you can check it out live when Hybrasil perform at Dublin club Backlash on June 7.

Following on from their remix of Kerri Chandler’s ‘The Promise’ earlier this year, Cork deep house duo Fish Go Deep have tweaked the knobs on a mix of Audio Soul ‘Community’, which has just been released on the top Brit house stamp, NRK. And the pair’s Ork Recordings stamp – co-owned by DK7’s Mark O’Sullivan – has just unleashed its latest EP Walkabout by Dutch duo Nick Hogendoorn and Eelke Kleijn. It will be followed by an EP from fellow Corkonian, Chymera, who is creating some of the world’s most beautiful techno at the moment. Fish Go Deep have also been busy writing new songs with vocalist Tracey K and join her for a live set at Trinity Rooms on June 3.

Another Leesider, Edwin James, has delivered a marvelous Corrugated Tunnel remix on the One Drop Does It 2007 Remixes Part One EP by David Duriez which is the ninth release from Galway-based house stamp Elevation (and out now).

There is also a Corrugated Tunnel Remix included with ‘Atmosdub’, the new single from the aforementioned Mark O’Sullivan out now on revered German imprint Harthouse. And electronic rockers Noise Control have enlisted Corrugated Tunnel to remix their debut single ‘Steel’, which hits download stores on June 8.

The Dublin five-piece will be launching it with a party at Crawdaddy on June 7, while it should also be noted that Corrugated Tunnel play live at Acii Disco The Hub (fast building a reputation as the capital’s most hedonistic Saturday night) on June 2 supported by DJ Jay Grogan.

When I'm Yawning

Naïve lyrics and more than a passing resemblence to the awful Leeds outfit The Music have, in the past, seen Wicklow five-piece Hybrasil flounder. Debut EP, We Got Music, in particular was a mixed and unfocussed work. Yet the electro-rock stompers redeem themselves on the infectious ‘When I’m Yawning’. The hook-laden feast draws comparisons to Kasabian. In particular, there are echoes of the Leceister band's ‘Processed Beats’.
