Arctic Monkeys to release single through Oxfam

'Crying Lightening' hits the shops on Friday, August 14

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 04 Aug 2009

Arctic Monkeys score another music industry first by making their new single, "Crying Lightning", available through Oxfam Ireland on Friday August 14.

"Oxfam is a institution and it's a delight to be working together on this project," enthuses Domino head honcho Laurence Bell. There are 48 Oxfam shops in Ireland, many of them in high streets that once housed a record shop, so as well as raising some money for a great cause we are able to get vinyl back onto the nation's high streets, which feels good.

The first taster from their Humbug album, the limited edition 7" will cost €3.99 and also feature their rather nifty cover of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Red Right Hand". If you dont own a record player, fear not, because purchasers will also be given a code that will enable them to download both tracks for free.

The single will be available from the Oxfam Ireland shops in Belfast, Cork, Ennis and Galway and Oxfambooks on Parliament Street, South King Street and the Rathmines Road in Dublin.

Says Oxfam's Head of Retail, Trevor Anderson: "We were thrilled when we heard about Domino's idea for the new Arctic Monkeys single and are delighted to be partnering with them on something that will be great for music fans, and help us raise money to fight the injustice of poverty at the same time."

If you happen to have a spare U23 EP or the Pistols' "God Save The Queen" on A&R lying around, the band are also asking fans to donate all their surplus vinyl, CDs and DVDs to their nearest Oxfam shop.
