Air on Francis Ford Coppola

The French duo met the director through his daughter Sofia.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 30 Jan 2012

Interviewed in the latest issue of Hot Press (on sale now), Air's Jean Benoit Dunckel talks about their ties to the film world.

Air are set to release their soundtrack to a newly restored version of the Georges Melies' classic 1902 silent film Le Voyage Dans La Lune next week.

Their soundtrack work in the past has chiefly been for Sofia Coppola, notably on The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation.

It introduced Dunckel and his musical partner Nicolas Godin into many cinematic circles.

"We were over at Sundance when The Virgin Suicides was showing and there was a lot of that stuff," Jean Benoit says. "We met Spike Jonze, who Sofia was with at the time, and hung out with Kirsten Dunst and so on. Those kind of experiences can be fun as long as you don’t take it all too seriously.”

Even meeting the legendary Francis Ford Coppola wasn't exactly serious business.

"“He came to one of our shows. When we were talking to him afterwards, he said that he’d had this dream about a group using a Theremin. Then he comes to the show and there we are playing a Theremin! It was pretty funny.”

Le Voyage Dans La Lune is out February 6. For more from Jean Benoit Dunckel, pick up the latest issue of Hot Press.
