Remembering Derek Bell

The Chieftains to stage tribute performances in honour of their late, legendary harpist Derek Bell in Dublin and Belfast

The Chieftains pay tribute to their former bandmate Derek Bell at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin (May 25) and The Waterfront, Belfast (26).

A member of the legendary Irish tradsters since 1972, Bell was a child prodigy who wrote his first concerto at age 12. Along with his Chieftains work, he appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Pittsburgh, Moscow, London and Budapest.

Tickets for what promises to be a moving night are available now priced £18 and £22.

Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains has admitted that he tried to arrange for a collaboration between the late country music legend Johnny Cash and The Chieftains in Wicklow in 1988, but that the meeting didn’t take place.

There's a bit of a tendency to take The Chieftains for granted. They, and mainman Paddy Moloney in particular, have been so prolific and have been responsible for so many interesting and varied musical experiments that one album can tend to blur into the next. It's a view that does them an injustice, however.
