Hysteria
Disappointingly not a cover of the Def Leppard track, this is instead a typically plodding pseudo-industrial workout from the perennially gloomy Devonshire boys.

Disappointingly not a cover of the Def Leppard track, this is instead a typically plodding pseudo-industrial workout from the perennially gloomy Devonshire boys. Matt Bellamy does his usual Stars In Your Eyes Thom Yorke tribute, and the lyrics, as ever, are Camus-lite: “I am endlessly caving in/Life is turning me inside out”. For God’s sake, kids, just snap up those copies of Holy Wood and The Downward Spiral and stick to the real thing. Nice artwork from Pink Floyd maestro Storm Thurgerson, mind.

Origin of Symmetry? Freak of Evolution more like. The common response to Muse’s Showbiz debut in 1999 was akin to a primitive people’s first glimpse of a spacecraft over the prehistorical landscape. Here was an unlikely but hugely accomplished hybrid of prog-rock flash, quasi-symphonic attack and ferocious virtuosity, spearheaded by Matt Bellamy’s soaring tenor and Dick-ian lyrics. An impressive sound, even if you didn’t know what the hell it was.
