4:35am

you couldn’t ask for a more soothing accompaniment to late summer evenings

Phil Udell, 19 Jul 2001

Tackling the heaviest of hearts head-on, Ms. Hayes’ ‘4:35am’ holds a salvo of five quite beautifully constructed songs, all seemingly based in the twilight hours. While lacking some of the louder edges her live performances have, you couldn’t ask for a more soothing accompaniment to late summer evenings as ‘Making Waves’, ‘Piano Song’ and of course the sweet ‘Evening Sun’. Plus, in a month when The Strokes can put two songs on a single and get a fiver for it, fine value for four lids.
