Telepathe with Patrick Kelleher and Meljoann, live at Whelan's

Tonight's three acts strike a pleasant balance between indie and trance

Robert O'Connor, 16 Aug 2010

Saturday nights at Whelan’s usually have an indie-rock sound. They're certainly not a venue with a DJ playing trance. But this night they struck a balance between the two with all three acts playing electronic instruments, creating a dark, seductive mood that DJs can create, except DJs don't have a band.

Telepathe was the headlining act. The Brooklyn duo are a mix of experimental rock and electronica that creates a strange mood in the room. They experiment with drones and weird sounds. Unfortunately, the heavy drums and bass easily overpowered their voices. This was a problem for the other acts as well.

The first one up was Meljoann. Her style is a mix of electronic sounds influenced by Skweee - heavy drums and heavy bass. Her voice can soar, but like before, the rhythm section overpowered her. She also wore stockings that had what looked like Archie comics printed on them. Nice.

Next was Patrick Kelleher. He had a harder sound and a more confident voice than Meljoann. Like before, it took until the end of his act before he really got into his stride. In the earlier part of his act, it had a vague popish feel with a piano synth and a relaxed, Jeremy Messersmith-like voice.
