Big romancer gets real

Jackie Hayden, 19 Mar 2009

This is David Kitt’s sixth album, the product of two years of late-night experimentation and recording in a home studio. It’s the sound of an artist trying to put difficult times behind him and, as the upbeat first track stridently proclaims, ‘Move It On’. The West African-tinged opening beat suggests a radical change of direction – but then Kittser swoops in with his trademark barely-arsed voice and you suddenly remember why we had that Big Romance with him back in 2001.

‘Alone Like That’ is a little charmer, surfing a warm keyboard swell and an emphatic beat. ‘Nobody Leaves’ is soft disco meets western soundtrack, with a synth bass riff worming its way into your cranium. There’s a subtle Latino lilt to ‘A Real Fire’ whilst ‘It’s Yours’ is about as unashamedly poppy as Kitt gets and ‘No Truth In Your Eyes’ sees the singer recasting himself as gnarled young bluesman.

Sometimes there’s a little too much fey toytown tinkling, as on parts of ‘Learning To Say Goodbye’. But Kitt has obviously coped well with his post-major label stress syndrome, and moved on. Let’s stay with him.

Key Track: 'Move it on'
