Sleepless Streets

Good stuff (odd accent aside)

Patrick Freyne, 10 Nov 2010

Peter Doran appears, going by his accent, to come from the same place as Ronan Keating and a barrage of Irish singer-songwriters (an inhospitable but over-sincere place in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean). I’ve been guilty of this as a singer myself, and presumably it’s how we’ll all speak when we eventually become the 51st State of America (it’s coming).

Putting this gripe aside, at its best Doran’s debut is an inventive acoustically-driven concoction, falling between the winding indie blues of Gomez (particularly on the opening track ‘Hunter’s Sketches’) and the guitar-picking intimacy of Neil Young (‘Steeped in You’). All told, a solid outing.

Key Track: ‘Steeped in You’

Scenic Route

In contrast to Lynch, Peter Doran’s debut is much more in tune with traditional singer-songwriter fare. This however, doesn’t make the Mullingar performers work any less impressive. Delicate and reserved, Doran’s tender voice swells with the sparse, acoustic-driven melody. Owing a great deal to Damien Rice, there’s an impressively warm and enchanting feel to ‘Scenic Route’. If debut album Wood is half as good we really do have much to look forward too.
