Pledge: A Tribute to Kerbdog

Kilkenny noisniks get the tribute album treatment. Huzzah!

Despite touring with some of the biggest names in rock and releasing two thunderous slabs of wax in the ’90s that rewrote the rules for countless alternative bands, Kilkenny’s Kerbdog never really got their dues, and by the time they disbanded in 1998, they were eclipsed by hordes of bands all favouring cookie monster vocals and clicky bass sounds. Pledge: A Tribute To Kerbdog tries to redress the balance and features some of the underground’s brightest hopes (such as Frank Turner, Cars On Fire and Left Side Brain) giving us heartfelt renditions of Kerbdog classics. You can really hear the affection for the band bleed through the speakers, and Dutch Schultz’s take on ‘Hard To Live’ and Mike Got Spike’s ‘Dry Riser’ are both suitably bloodthirsty. What’s best about the record though, is that after listening to it you immediately want to go back and revisit to the source material all over again. Excellent stuff.

Fabrice Lig’s effort is passable neo-Detroit, the pleasing, phased percussion not combining well with an odd shredded FX patch and hyperactive low-end. Regis and Female’s electro-tech effort ‘C Chaos’ is much better: reminiscent of ‘Polynomial C’, the Aphex-style melodies are the perfect foil to the razor-sharp, multi-layered beats and throbbing kick.

This charity record, presided over by Belle and Sebastian, is a bit patchy but sure to get everyone in the car singing along.

Four tracks from the Starbaby vaults from Fabrice Lig, Morgan Giest and John Tejada that sound like they were made after listening to some Dan Curtin records.

Four stylish cuts on this label debut. All are quality takes on ze minimal sound, but Mark Ashken’s ‘Part Time Isolation’ stands out. There are bumpin’ drums, oddball FX and a nutty, chopped applause sample-cum-breakdown that freaks the floor.

Pick of the bunch here is label boss David Ekenback’s ‘Breakdance’ – buzzing tech drums, tribal percussion, Rachmad-esque stabs, musical key changes, a fierce bass and proper bazzin’ breakdowns, make this a choon.

The songwriter’s oldest friends – Don Henley, Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Jackson Browne – occasionally seem hamstrung by too much respect for the material, although Bob Dylan does essay a decent ‘Mutineer’, and you can hear Bruce Springsteen’s mouth water as he gets his chops around the East Texas testament of ‘My Ride’s Here’.

While part two was never going to be as eventful, there is more than enough on offer to justify its existence – SP overlord Etienne De Cercy and Alex Gopher’s ‘Overnet’ is a thrilling, punk/funk meets acid house stormer, ‘Fasttrack’ updates Kraftwerk for 2004 while ‘Soulseek’’s is a intruiging blend of synths and beats.
