The outrageously glamorous Bette Midler once said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” I don’t know about that, love, but the power of the statement item is certainly not something to be underestimated.
A common mistake in times of monetary tightness is to reduce the amount we spend per item of clothing as opposed to the amount of items we purchase. In other words, the longer we’re broke, the sooner our wardrobe starts to look like the Reduced To Clear bin at Guiney’s. This is where the statement item comes in.
In their Autumn/Winter 09 collection, Oasis have created some truly special pieces with this as their mantra; the wow factor, no explanation required. Show stopping jewels, an outrageous dress, skyscraper heels; if it’s daring enough, one component of the look draws all the limelight, leaving you free to pair that marvelous opera coat with a €20 dress and a pair of €4 pumps.
Remember that one item can an outfit make and, if you choose it really carefully, even a wardrobe.
