Nighthawks at the Cobalt - Saturday, May 26th
|
Tickets are now on sale... Nighthawks at the Cobalt
Saturday, May 26th, 2012
Cobalt Cafe 16 North Great Georges Street Dublin 1 Little Xs for Eyes Little Xs for Eyes are without doubt one of our favourite Irish bands, and we are delighted to finally get them along to the Cobalt on May 26th. What a great way to round off the season! If you are not familiar with this brilliant band, then check out this recent performance from them on RTE’s The Works - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQOUwCV2qbU. And also check out their recent debut album – entitled S.A.D. – which deservedly received the following praise in State Magazine: “The execution is perfect, a crystal clear combination of twinkling instruments and beautifully balanced vocals. S.A.D. is a record of real substance.” Little Xs for Eyes will be releasing a double A-side single – ‘Somewhere with a Dancefloor’ / ‘Summer Never Comes’ – at the end of this month. Don’t miss them at Nighthawks – it’s going to be special. Michael Mee Michael is a former solicitor and law lecturer from Cork who took the plunge a few years ago and became a full-time stand-up comedian. (The lad is clearly insane… or allergic to law!) Fortunately, things have worked out well for Michael, and he has had quite an impact on the Irish comedy circuit. He has appeared on TV shows such as The Late Late Show, The World Stands Up (Paramount Comedy) and The Savage Eye; and has also had two solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival – both of which were very successful. On top of that, Michael has written material for Tommy Tiernan, Colin Murphy, Barry Murphy, Gary Cooke and Ardal O'Hanlon; and he presents a weekly show on RTE 2XM called Pimp My iPod. Tom Cooney Tom’s first record, Presque Vu, was shortlisted for the prestigious Australian Music Prize (their version of the Choice and Mercury awards), and his second album, The Repetition, was recently launched in Ireland with a big gig in Whelan’s. The Repetition is definitely the work of a singer-songwriter on top form and you can check out its trailer right here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gOMqVJjqYM. It can only be a matter of time before Irish audiences wake up to the huge talent of Tom Cooney – so catch him at the Cobalt while you can. Sarah Clancy Sarah is a relative newcomer to the poetry world, but she has wasted no time in making her mark on the Irish literary scene. In the last two years Sarah has been shortlisted for several poetry prizes, including the Listowel Collection of Poetry Competition and the Patrick Kavanagh Award, and has had her work published in various journals and magazines. Earlier this year one of Sarah’s poems received second prize in the Ballymaloe International Poetry Competition, and this month she will publish her debut collection with Salmon Poetry. It is entitled Thanks for Nothing, Hippies – and will be launched on May 31st at the Unitarian Church on Stephen’s Green. Niamh Marron Niamh Marron is a live-wire, inside a firework, sitting on a volcano. What we’re trying to say here is… Niamh Marron is a very lively stand-up comedian and she will blow the roof off the Cobalt on May 26th. Niamh is a former finalist in the Bulmers Comedy Competition, and she has performed at various festivals, including Edinburgh and Kilkenny. Niamh’s TV work includes appearances on Podge and Rodge and The Warehouse, and CULCH.IE wrote the following about her: “Niamh Marron really works the stage, talks a mile a minute, is very theatrical and the crowd love her for it. She takes risks and doesn't conform to the norm." You’ve been warned. Kieran Lawless Kieran is a former winner of the Bulmers Comedy Competition, and also one of the best MCs in town. Kieran has performed his stand-up at all the major comedy venues in Ireland – and some of the minor ones in London too – and has recently featured in Student Teacher – part of RTE’s online Storyland Competition – www.rte.ie/drama/featured/storyland/studentteacher.html. Kieran has also been chosen as one of the featured acts in this year’s 10 DAYS IN DUBLIN Festival (www.10daysindublin.ie), so be sure to catch his set at Nighthawks first. Rob Smith Rob Smith is one of the good guys. We know this because he has kindly offered to give a free copy of his second album, The Juliana Field, to the first thirty people through the door at the Cobalt on May 26th. (Point of clarification – that’s thirty copies for thirty people, as opposed to a single free copy shared amongst thirty people. You know what we mean!) Anyway, Rob is currently working on the follow-up to The Juliana Field, and his set at Nighthawks will be a mix of old and new songs. Get there early for your album! (And – no – it’s not the guy from The Cure!) Giles Brody Giles is a funny and insightful stand-up comedian. He is a former runner-up in the TedFest Comedy Competition, and one third of the Gangbusters comedy sketch group. Like Kieran above, Giles has been heavily involved with Student Teacher on RTE; and Giles was also one of the key contributors to this short work of comedy genius - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ukp1dwISkT4. Watch it twice. Tickets are now on sale at the OXFAM SHOP on Parliament Street beside Temple Bar. Tel. 01 6707022. Price €13. Capacity is limited, so please buy your tickets early in order to avoid disappointment. These shows always sell out. Doors open at 7.45pm. Strictly no admission after 8.10pm. Show ends at 11.15pm. Bar available.

"a class apart from the rest" You know all the other acts, Dave? Fair play. Although, in fairness, LITTLE Xs FOR EYES are superb. A great way to finish up at the Cobalt for the summer break.

| Rob, I won't lie to you, sir, it's going to be tough on the marriage. There are usually thousands of good looking groupies throwing themselves at acts in the Cobalt. In fact it often resembles scenes from The Stones' Cocksucker Blues. Best bring the wife!

Tricky, this promoter only gets to roll up the leads and count the Shure 58s at the end of the night. The glamour! There are still about 20 tickets left for the gig on Saturday. So forget Jedward. Forget the soccer friendly. Actually, what time does the soccer kick off at? (I bet Rob is sorry he booked a gig for the same night.)

| Glad to hear it. Now all I have to worry about is the Eurovision... although I worry about that fiasco every year.

what's scariest about the eurovision is the volume of sane normal people who're actually getting excited about Jedward possibly winning it. I don't mind if they do, i'm not someone who hates them just cause they're jedward, but WHY CARE ... WHY CARE AT ALL!!!!

I like Jedward's complete lack of cynicism. Best of luck to them. But the Eurovision is a beast I can live without. I would much rather a gig from Little Xs for Eyes... and Rob of course! Look at this genius video -

Just in case any of you were heading to this to see Rob Smith tomorrow... unfortunately Rob now has tonsillitis and can't make it. The rather brilliant Dermot Kennedy - no relation - is going to cover Rob's slot. Dermot plays with Shadows & Dust, and is one of the best young talents I've seen. He sings like a young Van Morrison. Gell well soon, Rob.

Yup, apologies to all intended on coming. Throat is banjaxed and causing considerable pain. My mates are still going down though - fair play to 'em. Thanks for filling the slot, Stephen.

Smithrob, have you tried Strepsils Warm lozenges? I eat them as sweets but they're supposed to be good for sore throats but I just love their peppery taste.
I'll have to go to another Nighthawks night soon...
