Boom!

Hotly-tipped Offaly band live up to their live promise

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 06 Sep 2010

How to describe this Tullamore-based outfit, led by charismatic frontman Mark Hogan? Well, anyone who has attended their incendiary live shows will attest to their blistering blend of rock, punk, funk, indie-pop and electronica. The good news is that their live prowess has transferred comfortably to record, and on this confident debut, produced by Grag Haver (Manics, Super Furries, Lost Prophets) they fulfil their promise.

Terrific recent single ‘New York City’ is as good it gets in the punk-funk stakes, though it has to be said it’s not a million miles away from Chili Peppers territory. However, ‘Five Years On’ could be their real marketing calling card. A memorable tune, with soaring vocals and a big driving rhythm, it calls to mind ’80s acts such as Simple Minds, The Cult and our own Cactus World News.

‘Disco Bitch’, meanwhile, is a stew of Scissors Sisters, Blondie (‘Rapture’) and the Dr Who theme, while ‘Lauren’s Song’ deals in conventional big rock balladry with some haunting atmospherics. With strummed acoustic guitars over a headlong rush of a rhythm, ‘Jealousy’ is another radio friendly gem that could win them followers. In complete contrast, ‘I Want You’ finds them back in speed rock mode in a race to the finish.
