Assembled by pop svengali Kim Fowley as a jailbait American riposte to the Sex Pistols, The Runaways managed to pack a spectacular amount of loose living into their four years together.
Their David Bowie-fixated bassist Cherie Currie comprehensively spilt the beans about all the sex, drugs and crashing through plate glass doors whilst completely gee-faced in her 1989 book Neon Angel, which has been updated and reissued to coincide with the Stateside premiere in April of The Runaways movie.
Early reports are that it’s a cracker with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart respectively looking spookily like Currie and Joan Jett who went on to rack up the hits in the ‘80s with The Blackhearts.

Far from being cheap titillation, Whip Smart is a brilliantly written book, which gives real insight into the psychology of being a sex worker.
