You’ve probably seen that ‘controversial’ (read: moronic) German AIDS campaign where Hitler has sex with this hot chick, followed by the tagline, “AIDS is a mass murderer”. No, AIDS is a virus and people with AIDS are ill, not genocidal. Anyway, it’s drawn Caught in the Net’s attention to this strange Youtube trend of making up subtitles for clips from Downfall/Der Untergang (2004 German drama about the last days of the Third Reich). Hence the video, ‘Hitler’s Reaction to the Oasis Split’, wherein Goebbels and other Nazis cower as the dictator vents his spleen: “This is a fucking joke! Their last album was brilliant! I had my first LSD trip to Be Here Now.” True to Youtube form, there’s also considerable amusement to be derived from the gormless user comments: “Thahaa. I speak german. and the subtitles are wrong. It’s been a long, hot summer – so spare a thought for our leather-clad friends. http://www.gothsinhotweather.com/ documents feats of steely commitment to trenchcoats, corsets, New Rocks, Docs and all the rest – sunshine or no. Each picture of a goth, gothette or multiples thereof – what is the collective noun of goth? shoal? coven? brood? gaggle? Anyway, each leather-lover snapped at the beach/in the park/at Disneyland is graded on two criteria: gothiness and sweatiness. Head-to-toe PVC, say, teamed with a Slipknot-style mask and steel toe-cap boots will garner full marks in both categories. Points seem to be deducted for concessions to the sunshine such as shorts, cotton and smiling as if you’re actually enjoying yourself. In particular, exposing ones flesh to the rays of the day star is frowned upon – who ever heard of a vampire with sunburn and freckles?
From PVC to dungarees. Children of the ‘90s will remember Ann and Barry and their fondness for cakes and jam, respectively. Comedian Neil Hickey has created a short, funny, slightly depressing Youtube video – ‘Ann and Barry Today’ (www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0w_TrXzpqo) – charting the kids’ progression to adulthood. Ann is grossly obese; Barry seems to have kicked his jam habit but still likes an ice-cream. One day, Mammy was in the kitchen and Daddy was in the garden when tragedy struck. Things have never been the same again…
