NEW ADVENTURES IN SCI-FI

Caught In The Net’s girlfriend won’t like it because it doesn’t star Jennifer Aniston or a cutesy little dog/mouse/guinea pig/other household pet with human personality traits, but we know there are squillions of Hot Press readers counting down to December 18 when James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi epic, Avatar, hits the big screen.

Stuart Clark, 07 Sep 2009

In what turned out to be a major occasion in itself, the trailer premiered last week at www.avatarmovie.com and looked every bit as visually stunning as its director promised it would be.

A few days earlier, the site had gone in to meltdown as over 20 million people tried to bag themselves a ticket for one of the 16-minute ‘sneak peak’ previews taking place in 58 countries but not, boo, Ireland.

You can read a full review at www.denofgeek.com, the ace UK movie/TV/games/comics site that’s also in a right old lather this week about The Wolfman and Christopher Nolan starting work on the film that might just out-CGI Avatar when it’s released next year, Inception.

From there it’s but a mere mouse-click to woodshopfilms.com/index.php/breakfast-at-sulimays where a group of Philadelphia senior citizens get to cast a critical ear over new albums by the likes of St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Mastodon and Dan Deacon who, naughty boy, gets ticked off for having too many ‘ding dongs’ in his music.

If Arts or Business Management strike you as being a little too hackneyed, collegeisforsuckers.com/2007/01/last-years-12-most-ridiculous-college-classes explains how you can expand your mind by studying daft, but real subjects such as Transnational Feminist Perspective on Immigration; Taking Marx Seriously; Mail Order Brides? Understanding the Philippines in Southeast Asian context; and – our favourite waste of time – Klingon And Other Invented Languages. That Hdip in Xposé Studies surely can’t be far away.

Which just leaves time for quick visits to snipurl.com/prisoninventions (‘muff-bags’ and other ingenious jailhouse inventions); www.youtube.com/watch?v=IawxMVsL0Xc (Leonard Cohen guests on Miami Vice); sendables.jibjab.com/view/BDM02sjSoZoAJRbL (the Hot Press Art Department as you’ve definitely never seen them before); and twhitler.com (“Hitler-related tweets in handy list form”).
