1981

Although you shouldn’t judge a single by the design of the record cover, The Flaw’s decision to go with a yellow Lego man in a little Lego set was well-advised, as it will doubtlessly appeal to people’s sense of nostalgia. All style and no substance? Not at all. The Monaghan group have hit the target with ‘1981’. A very strong pop-punk record that only improves on repeat listens. In other words: an anthem in the making.

Sixteen

Long a live favourite for the Monaghan 4-piece they finally give this guitar pop gem a proper single release. The guitars on the opening riff sound so much like Blur’s ‘Song No 2’ that it has to be some kind of in-joke. Luckily that’s where the similarities end on this sublime slice of teenage angst. Paul Finn has a terrific voice – sort of a cross between Bowie and Echo & the Bunnymen’s Ian McCullough and the band’s gift for an indie pop melody is impressive to say the least.

Out Tonight

Available as a free download from their website, The Flaws' new single does little to justify their increasingly hyped reputation. Though ‘Out Tonight’ is a fine surge of pop-punk delivered at breakneck speed, it isn’t particularly memorable. Little here will set the Carrickmacross lads apart from a host of new acts plying the same territory.

No Room

It’s remarkable that Carickmacross’s The Flaws can produce something so mature and confident with their first proper release. ‘No Room’ is majestic, with its understated verses providing a launchpad from which frontman Paul Finn can soar to spectacular heights in the chorus. In another life, he would be holding those epic notes all the way to the final of The X Factor. But such a waste doesn’t bear thinking about.

Shock and Flaw

Right now, they are one of the hottest acts in Ireland. But The Flaws started out as a covers band who couldn't play their instruments.
