Colm O Hare

Not an official release in the strictest sense, this in-store sampler serves as a timely reminder – if one were needed - of the quality, variety and commercial potential of the current batch of homegrown releases. With 14 tracks on offer it covers all genres, includes both familiar and unknown names and immediately impresses with its breadth of talent.

Relative newcomers like ex-Lir man David Hopkins (‘I Can’t Speak Your Name’) and Derry nu-jazz merchant Claire Sproule (‘Flame’) sit comfortably alongside established acts like Sharon Shannon (‘Courtin’ In The Kitchen’) and The Frank & Walters (‘Fast Anthony’).

The increasingly impressive Guggenheim Grotto offer ‘Told You So’ from their Waltzing Alone album while Marc Carroll’s sonically ambitious ‘Love Over Gold’, Turn’s quirky ‘Sorry’s Just A Word’ and The Chalets’ charmingly punky ‘Two Chord Song’ showcase the diversity of approaches. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Gemma Hayes’ ‘Tomorrow’ reminds us why she should be huge

Christie Hennessy (‘Better That Way’) might be an elder statesman among this lot but the Kerryman remains huge in the UK serving as a reminder that perseverance pays off. And it’s nice to hear Toasted Heretic’s quirky ‘LSD’ again and a good excuse to check out their newly released back catalogue. Also included is Autamata’s groove-laden ‘The Tap’, Windings’ tender folk song ‘Bubbles’ and Delorentos’ achingly poignant ‘Any Other Way’.

While you can quibble with the inevitable omissions (where’s Pugwash?), this is a fine overview of what’s happening on the homefront right now.
