It's a Shame About Gemma Ray
The strangest cover record since the heyday of cat power
Edwin McFee, 25 Aug 2010

London-based singer/songwriter Gemma Ray’s second effort is a collection of, erm, unique choices ranging from Buddy Holly’s ‘Everyday’ to the theme music from Rosemary’s Baby (which also features the lyrics to Sonic Youth’s ‘Drunken Butterfly’ sung over the top). On paper, this schizophrenic selection of songs shouldn’t really work. And yet her Polly Jean Harvey-esque croon ties them all together beautifully; thus, the album marks her out as one to watch in the future.
