Derry gets set for City of Culture celebrations

Primal Scream and David Holmes kick off the musical side of things...

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 26 Oct 2012

A live Primal Scream and a DJ-ing David Holmes kick off the musical celebrations on March 19 as Derry is bestowed with 2013 UK City of Culture status.

Tickets priced £25 go on sale on Monday November 12.

As previously revealed on hotpress.com, Divorcing Jack/Murphy’s Law writer Colin Bateman has turned The Undertones’ seminal punk classic ‘Teenage Kicks’ into a stage musical, which will run throughout November in the Millennium Forum.

The Nobel Prize-winning Seamus Heaney will kick off a major poetry festival; a new Sam Shepard play is being staged by Field Day, the local company founded by Brian Friel and there will be visits from both the Royal Ballet and London Symphony Orchestra.

In another coup, the Turner Prize will be held outside England for the first time with the exhibition and subsequent award ceremony taking place in Ebrington Square.

There will be a special Other Voices: From Kerry To Derry edition of Philip King’s long-running RTÉ show, plus some major outdoor gigs yet to be announced.
