Erros: New Relics

Ambient loveliness from Scotland’s Animal Collective...

Ed Power, 24 Oct 2012

Errors’ ghostly throb is equal parts John Carpenter soundtrack and Animal Collective’s acid noodling. At their best, their music is blissed out and gorgeous, huge, slow melodies looming like ocean liners in the mist.

Occasionally, it is true, there’s a tendency to prog out, songs losing themselves in the experimental fug. On their fourth record, the Glaswegians cleave to the maxim ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t mess with the formula’. ‘Engine Homes’ is a woozed-up Flying Lotus, the ambient ache of ‘Grangehaven’ evokes Tangerine Dream’s chilly seventies angst. Nothing here is remotely original – but if you submit to its flotation tank charms New Relics will carry you away regardless.
